Artist Biography

Dereck Harris is an artist, born in Liverpool in 1962, currently based in London. The digital screen is evoked by his paintings and they acknowledge the web as an open source for imagery, with its own tropes of communication. The paintings depict contemporary dancers captured, frozen in time, in the moment of a baroque spectacle. In the tableaux of his painted stages, the discomfort of the player’s body flexes like a muscular metaphor for inward struggle and psychological resistance.

Dereck was a founding member of Cubitt Gallery and Studios in 1992; he oversaw the project management for the organisation to move three times; from Goods Way, Kings Cross in 1993, to Cubitt Street, Kings Cross, in 1994 and finally to Angel Mews in Islington (Cubitt’s current home) in 2001. He continues to give committee time, ensuring the survival of the co-op and developing plans for a permanent home over the coming decade.

He was head of BA Painting at Wimbledon College of Arts, UAL from 2005-16, performed External Examiner duties at various colleges he developed a UAL pedagogic research strand with Michael Spencer (from CSM) called Feral Space.
